ATPL

EASA Modular Pilot Training Path (Including BIF, UPRT & MEP-IR Transition)

This guide follows EASA Part-FCL regulations, detailing the full modular path from zero to Frozen ATPL (CPL-IR-MEP).

📌 Step 1: Class 1 Medical Certificate

Regulation: EASA Part-MED (MED.A.030)
Why? Required before solo flight in PPL training.

📌 Step 2: PPL(A) – Private Pilot License

Regulation: EASA FCL.210.A (PPL Requirements)

45 flight hours minimum, including:

  • 25 hours dual instruction
  • 10 hours solo flight, including 5 hours solo cross-country
  • 1 solo cross-country flight of at least 150 NM

🎯 Goal: Obtain PPL(A) – required to progress further.

📌 Step 3: Start ATPL Theory (Self-Study or Distance Learning Allowed)

Regulation: EASA FCL.515 & FCL.510.A (ATPL Theoretical Knowledge)

📚 14 subjects
12-18 months duration
📍 Must pass all exams before CPL & IR Skills Test

🎯 Best Strategy: Study ATPL theory while doing Time Building & Night Rating.

📌 Step 4: Time Building + Night Rating + Basic Instrument Flight (BIF)

   Night Rating (NR)

Regulation: EASA FCL.810 (Night Rating Requirements)

5 flight hours (including at least 1 hour solo night flying).
Required before starting IR training.

Time Building (Total: ~100-150 Hours Before CPL)

Required to meet the 200-hour total for CPL.
Includes cross-country flying to improve navigation & IFR skills.

   Basic Instrument Flight (BIF)

Regulation: Included in IR training syllabus but often done earlier.
May be done during Time Building to gain instrument experience before IR training.

📌 Step 5: CPL(A) – Commercial Pilot License (on SEP first)

Regulation: EASA FCL.320 & FCL.325 (CPL Flight Training & Experience)

Requirements:
Total 200 flight hours before CPL skills test
150 hours as Pilot-in-Command (PIC)
CPL Flight Training: 15 hours minimum, including:

  • 10 hours instrument training
  • 5 hours on a complex aircraft (variable pitch propeller & retractable landing gear)

🔎 ATPL Theory Must Be Passed Before CPL Skills Test

📌 Step 6: IR(A) – Instrument Rating (on SEP first)

Regulation: EASA FCL.600 (IR Requirements)

IR Training Requirements:
50 hours instrument time (40 hours can be in a simulator).
Single-engine IR first to transition later to MEP-IR.
Must pass IR Skill Test before progressing to MEP.

🔎 ATPL Theory Must Be Passed Before IR Skills Test

📌 Step 7: MEP(A) – Multi-Engine Piston Rating

Regulation: EASA FCL.725 (MEP Training)

MEP Training:
6 hours flight training (including asymmetric flight)
Must pass MEP Skill Test

🎯 Goal: Apply for MEP-VFR rating on license

Prepare for Multi-Engine IR.

📌 Step 8: MEP-IR(A) – Multi-Engine Instrument Rating (Short Transition!)

Regulation: EASA FCL.620 (ME-IR Transition)

🔎 If you already hold an IR on SEP, only 5 flight hours on MEP required!

Total: 5 hours flight training
MEP-IR Skill Test

📌 Step 9: UPRT – Upset Prevention & Recovery Training

Regulation: EASA FCL.745.A (UPRT Requirements)

3 flight hours + 5 hours theory
Required before MCC & airline applications.

📌 Step 10: MCC & JOC – Multi-Crew Cooperation & Jet Orientation

Regulation: EASA FCL.735.A (MCC Requirements)

MCC Training (Airliner Procedures & CRM):
25 hours simulator training
Theoretical knowledge course

JOC (Jet Handling & High-Speed Operations) – Optional but Recommended

🎯 Goal: Prepare for airline screening & type rating.

🎯 Final Goal: Frozen ATPL (CPL-IR-MEP + ATPL Theory Passed)

Once you have:
CPL(A) License
IR(A) – Multi-Engine Instrument Rating
MEP(A) Rating
ATPL Theory Passed

🎯 Your ATPL is "Frozen" until you reach 1500 flight hours for a full ATPL!
